Derthona Timorasso: the great Piedmontese white with extraordinary aging potential
The Derthona Timorasso Colli Tortonesi DOC 2023 by Viberti Giovanni is a fascinating expression of Timorasso, one of Piedmont's most distinctive native grape varieties and one of the Italian white wines with the greatest potential for aging.
The grapes come from vineyards in Monleale, in the heart of the Tortona Hills, one of the historic areas behind the renaissance of Timorasso. At around 400 meters above sea level, clay-limestone soils and east to southeast-facing vineyards provide the conditions for a wine with remarkable elegance, depth and longevity.
Low-temperature fermentation followed by extended aging on fine lees enhances the natural complexity of Timorasso while preserving its freshness, structure and distinctive character.
Derthona is sometimes described as the "Barolo of white wines", a comparison that refers to its remarkable ability to evolve in the bottle. With age, Timorasso can develop increasingly complex mineral, petrol and hydrocarbon notes, recalling the evolution of great Rieslings.
The winemaker's notes
"Timorasso is one of Italy's most surprising white grape varieties. When young, it charms with freshness and fruit, but it is with time that it reveals its true greatness, developing remarkable complexity. It is a wine that continues to evolve in the glass and rewards those who are willing to wait."

Why we chose it
We chose Derthona by Viberti Giovanni because it shows another side of Piedmont: a region capable of producing not only great red wines, but also white wines of remarkable character and longevity.
Timorasso combines structure, freshness, minerality and aging potential in a way that few Italian white grape varieties can match.
This is an ideal bottle for those who already know and appreciate Timorasso, but also for anyone looking to discover one of the most fascinating native grape varieties in Piedmont.
The territory
The vineyards are located in Monleale, in the Tortona Hills, an area closely associated with the revival of Timorasso and the work of the producers who have helped establish its reputation.
At approximately 400 meters above sea level, the vineyards grow on light, clay-rich and calcareous soils. The combination of altitude and significant day-night temperature variations promotes slow and balanced ripening, helping the grapes retain acidity and aromatic freshness while developing the mineral character typical of the area.
The winery
The Viberti Giovanni family is best known for its historic Barolo production in the Langhe. In recent years, the winery has also turned its attention to the Tortona Hills, attracted by the extraordinary potential of Timorasso.
The same attention to precision, vineyard expression and respect for the territory that characterizes the winery's Langhe wines is applied to this Piedmontese white.
The result is a deep, elegant and structured Timorasso, designed not only to be enjoyed young but also to develop greater complexity with bottle age.
