Nero d’Avola Vittoria DOC 2021 – Paolo Calì
A Nero d’Avola that expresses Vittoria through its most authentic character: ripe fruit, freshness and the distinctive identity of the area’s sandy soils. Mediterranean and expressive, yet far from heavy, it shows the Sicilian grape in a fresh and approachable style.
The Winemaker’s Notes
by Yuri Stefani
Paolo Calì’s Nero d’Avola is one of those wines that shows a different side of Sicily, away from the stereotypes of powerful and highly concentrated reds. It is unmistakably Mediterranean, but retains freshness and drinkability, with fruit at the centre and a well-defined but balanced tannic structure.
Above all, it is a wine of place: Vittoria, its ancient marine sands and one of Sicily’s most important native varieties come together in a straightforward and expressive wine.
Why We Chose It
Because it perfectly represents Paolo Calì’s philosophy: starting with the territory and native grape varieties to create wines with a clear identity, without pursuing concentration for its own sake.
The 2021 vintage was also awarded Winner at Sud Top Wine 2024 in the category dedicated to red wines made from Nero d’Avola.
The Territory
The vineyards are located around Vittoria, in southeastern Sicily, in the province of Ragusa. The estate’s soils are characterised by ancient marine sands originating from prehistoric sea dunes.
This distinctive environment plays an important role in the wines of Vittoria, helping give them a personality that differs from the more powerful and concentrated expressions of Nero d’Avola.
The Winery
Paolo Calì is based in Vittoria and works with a strong focus on Sicily’s native grape varieties and local terroir. The winery’s philosophy is to make wines free from trends and rigid formulas, allowing the grapes and the land to speak for themselves.
The Nero d’Avola is fermented in stainless steel, with approximately 8–15 days of maceration on the skins.
