The authentic red expression of the Colli Orientali del Friuli

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is one of the most distinctive native grape varieties of Friuli Venezia Giulia. For centuries, it has been part of the wine-growing tradition of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, where the combination of hillside vineyards, mineral-rich soils, and significant temperature variations allows it to express remarkable character and freshness.

The interpretation by Grillo Iole brings together the grape's natural intensity and a refined, balanced style. Ripe dark fruit meets lively freshness, delicate spice, and well-integrated tannins, creating a red that is generous without becoming heavy.

A fascinating choice for discovering one of the authentic native red wines of northeastern Italy.

The winemaker's notes

"Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is one of those grape varieties that doesn't need to imitate anyone. It has a personality of its own: intense fruit, natural freshness, and a subtle spicy character that makes it immediately recognizable. It is a sincere wine that tells the story of Friuli in every sip."

— Yuri Stefani

Why we chose it

We chose Grillo Iole's Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso because it perfectly represents our approach to wine: discovering native grape varieties through producers who work with respect for their land.

It is a wine rooted in centuries of Friulian tradition, yet its freshness, balance, and clean fruit make it feel remarkably contemporary. An excellent introduction to Refosco for those discovering the variety for the first time, while offering plenty of character for those who already know it.

The territory

The vineyards are located in Prepotto, in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, one of the region's most distinctive wine-growing areas.

The local ponca, an alternation of marl and sandstone, provides excellent drainage and contributes minerality, savoriness, and aromatic complexity. Significant temperature variations between day and night encourage slow and balanced ripening, helping preserve the grape's natural freshness and aromatic definition.

It is a landscape where the character of Refosco is shaped by both the soil and the cool Alpine influences of northeastern Italy.

The winery

Grillo Iole has been cultivating vineyards in Prepotto for generations, with a philosophy centred on respect for nature and the enhancement of native Friulian grape varieties.

Production is deliberately limited and quality-focused, with the aim of expressing the identity of the Colli Orientali through wines that are authentic, elegant, and closely connected to their place of origin.
